Term 2025-2026
University of Twente
Enschede, The Netherlands
Tom Hartman finished his masters in 2018 with honors and the PhD in 2023 with honors both at the University of Twente at the Power Electronics and EMC group. During only this short period of time he has shown his excellence in the field of EMC by co-authoring over 30+ papers. Two papers are (being) published in the IEEE Transactions on EMC while the conference papers are published at EMC dedicated conferences including IEEE EMC+SIPI, IEEE GEMCCON, ESA workshop on Aerospace EMC, APEMC, and with EMC Europe as the primary channel of publication. He has won the 2021 President Memorial Award of the IEEE EMC society, presented in memory of Donald N. Heirman and he was winner of the 2022 Richard B. Schultz Best Transaction Paper Award of IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility.
As an educator he is already involved in the design of a course called “EMC on Tour” which is a small and interactive course aimed at practitioners and university of applied sciences in the Netherlands that would like an introductory guest lecture (series) on EMC. The course is part of collaboration between University of Twente and the Dutch EMC-ESD association. Also he has actively contributed into enabling less privileged countries like Ukraine and Indonesia by acquiring funding for the exchange of master students and sending guest lecturers from the Netherlands to encourage students toward the EMC domain.
Talk: From Susceptible Static Energy Meters to Electromagnetic Compatible Energy Measurements
Abstract: A presentation on electromagnetic interference issues with Smart Meters which have resulted in overestimations of the energy bill, as well as underestimations, even resulting in a perceived energy generation. Causes of these issues are identified and solutions proposed.
