Technical Committee 9 – Computational Electromagnetics

TC 9 Activity Areas and Technical Resources

TC 9 activities are organized around computational electromagnetics and simulation-based EMC engineering. The committee’s primary technical interest is the modeling, simulation, analysis, and validation of electromagnetic compatibility/interference (EMC/EMI) applications, as well as related signal-integrity and power-integrity (SI/PI) problems where electromagnetic modeling methods play a central role.

Current Activity Areas

EMC/CEM Simulation Methods and Practices

This activity area focuses on practical, repeatable, and technically credible approaches for simulation-based EMC engineering. Topics include modeling setup assumptions, numerical-method selection, key performance indicators, validation and correlation, uncertainty, reporting, and practical limits of model applicability.

EMC Modeling, Validation, and Correlation

This activity area focuses on model validation, measurement-to-simulation correlation, benchmark problems, uncertainty assessment, and best practices for applying computational electromagnetics to practical EMC engineering problems.

SI/PI-Related Computational Electromagnetics Modeling

This activity area focuses on computational electromagnetic methods used for signal-integrity and power-integrity applications where electromagnetic modeling is central. Topics include chip/package/PCB/system interactions, interconnect modeling, coupling, return-path effects, PDN-related electromagnetic behavior, and model validation.

Multiphysics and System-Level Modeling

This activity area focuses on simulation workflows that connect electromagnetic behavior with system-level effects and, where applicable, signal integrity, power integrity, thermal behavior, mechanical structure, packaging, cabling, shielding, and platform-level interactions.

Emerging Computational Methods

This activity area follows emerging modeling approaches relevant to EMC and CEM, including data-driven modeling, AI/ML-assisted simulation, reduced-order models, hybrid solvers, scalable computational methods, and simulation-automation workflows.

  • The EMI/EMC Model/Simulation Validation Website is a TC 9 technical resource jointly sponsored by the IEEE EMC Society TC 9 committee and the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES). It includes information related to standard modeling problems, feature-selective validation, submitting results, and model-validation papers.
